The short version

This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from anyone else's server. The fonts, the images and the one script all come from kanema.app itself. If you change the colour theme, the site saves that preference in your browser. The app keeps everything on your device and sends us nothing at all. There is no Kanema account to make. Kanema Pro is bought through Apple, and nothing about the purchase reaches us. If you connect OpenSubtitles, Trakt or a media server of your own, the app talks to that service directly, and what it sends is listed below.

Who is responsible

The data controller for this website and for Kanema is Patrick Sibale, an independent developer in the United Kingdom, who makes and sells Kanema in his own name. Write to privacy@kanema.app with anything on this page, including a request to see, correct or erase what we hold. We do not publish a postal address; the email address reaches us and is answered.

What the website collects

Nothing that identifies you. Our host records the usual server log entries needed to serve a page and to keep the site up: IP address, the page asked for, the time, and the browser's user-agent string. Those logs are kept for as long as our host keeps them, which is a matter of weeks rather than months, and are used only for security and troubleshooting. The lawful basis is legitimate interests: keeping the site running and defending it against abuse.

The theme preference is the only browser storage used. It is strictly necessary to remember the display choice you ask the site to make, so it does not require consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. No consent banner is needed for the site as it currently works.

What the app collects

Nothing. Kanema has no servers. Your playlists, logins, favourites, watchlists and settings are written to storage on the device and never leave it, except in the directions you choose:

  • Your provider. Kanema connects to whichever M3U address or Xtream portal you enter, exactly as any player would. That provider sees your requests and your IP address, and their privacy policy governs it, not ours. We never see those details.
  • A media server of your own. If you add a Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server, Kanema signs in to it and plays from it, as any player would. Signing in to Plex goes through plex.tv, run by Plex, Inc., which also tells Kanema where your servers are; you type a code at plex.tv/link, so Kanema never sees your Plex password. The server and plex.tv see your requests and your IP address, and their own privacy policies govern that. A Jellyfin or Emby username and password, and the sign-in any of these servers gives back, are kept in the Keychain on your device.
  • OpenSubtitles. Only when you ask for subtitles: Kanema sends OpenSubtitles.com the name of the film or series you are watching, with its year or its season and episode, and the language you are looking for. If you sign in to OpenSubtitles in Settings, your username and password go to them too, and are kept in the Keychain. OpenSubtitles sees those requests and your IP address, and its privacy policy governs that. Subtitles you download stay in the app's cache on the device, which the system clears when it needs room.
  • Trakt. Only if you connect Trakt in Settings: Kanema tells Trakt when a film or an episode starts, pauses and stops, and how far it got, so Trakt can keep your watch history. Live channels are never sent. You connect by typing a code at trakt.tv, so Kanema never sees your Trakt password; it keeps only the connection, in the Keychain, until you disconnect. Disconnecting in Settings stops it and withdraws Kanema's access. What Trakt already holds stays with Trakt, under its privacy policy, until you delete it there.
  • AirPlay and Chromecast. When you send the picture to a television or a speaker, it goes over your own network to that device. With AirPlay, the device may fetch the stream from your provider itself.
  • iCloud. If you are signed in to iCloud, Kanema keeps your playlists, favourites, arrangements, resume points and settings the same on each of your devices by storing them in your own private iCloud database, through Apple's CloudKit. Logins go in its encrypted fields. That database belongs to your Apple Account: Apple stores it under its own privacy policy, it counts against your iCloud storage, and we can't read it. Signing out of iCloud, or turning iCloud off for Kanema, keeps everything on the one device.
  • Pictures your playlist names. Channel logos, posters and programme pictures are fetched from wherever your playlist, guide or server says they are, which can be a server other than your provider's. That server sees the request and your IP address.
  • A backup you make. The backup file is written where you ask it to be written. It goes nowhere else.

There is no advertising, no tracking identifier, no crash reporting and no usage measurement of any kind.

Buying Kanema Pro

Kanema Pro is bought through the App Store. Apple takes the payment and holds your payment details and your Apple Account under its own privacy policy. Kanema never receives your card or payment details, your name, your email address or anything else that says who you are. The sales reports Apple gives us are totals, such as how many were sold in each country, with nobody's identity in them.

To tell whether Pro is unlocked, the app asks StoreKit, Apple's purchase system on your device, for the purchases on your Apple Account. Apple signs each one, and the app checks that signature on the device itself. Nothing about your purchase is sent to us or to anyone else, because there is no Kanema server to send it to. The app keeps a note on the device of whether Pro is unlocked, so its widgets can read it.

Renewals, cancellations and refunds are between you and Apple. Buying Pro doesn't change what the app collects, which is still nothing: Kanema's App Store privacy details say "Data Not Collected".

Sending data outside the UK

Kanema is made in the United Kingdom, but this site is served from outside it, so a request for this site leaves the country. One party is involved, and it receives nothing about you beyond the address your request came from:

  • Cloudflare, Inc., in the United States, which hosts this site on kanema.app.

This transfer relies on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. No personal data beyond an IP address is involved.

A purchase of Kanema Pro goes from your device to Apple, as described above, and never through us.

If you connect OpenSubtitles, Trakt or a Plex server, your device sends what is listed above to that service directly, wherever the service runs, and its own privacy policy says where that is. We are not part of those connections and receive nothing from them.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of your personal data, ask for it to be corrected or erased, object to how it is used, or ask us to restrict it. Because we hold no account for you, in practice there is usually nothing on our side to act on, but write to privacy@kanema.app and we will tell you exactly what we hold. We answer within one month, as the UK GDPR requires.

If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or call 0303 123 1113.

Children

Kanema is not aimed at children and collects nothing from anyone, of any age. What plays inside it is whatever your provider supplies, which is your responsibility to control.

Changes

If this policy changes the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on the home page.
